Client context

Where the story starts.

A rental business set out to let customers access products without necessarily buying them, connecting people who need items with partners who own them. For the customer the promise is simple: find something, book it, use it, return it. Underneath, a rental is far more than a sale — it is a relationship with a beginning, a middle and an end, and every stage has to be tracked.

The challenge

A rental is not a sale. It is a lifecycle that has to be modelled end to end.

Standard ecommerce is a straight line: order, payment, delivery. A rental runs through discovery, verification, booking, payment, handover, a usage period, extension, return, inspection and settlement — with counterparty risk on both sides. A conventional order model cannot describe temporary possession, availability windows or the split between what a customer pays and what a partner is settled, so the platform needed a purpose-built transaction model.
